Laminators, Finishers and Fit-Out Carpenters

We’re building our network of Laminators, Finishers and Fit Out Carpenters for upcoming projects across the UK.

A background in composite superyacht or yacht construction would be beneficial, but we’re also keen to hear from people with transferable skills from industries such as automotive and interiors.

Opportunities include both short-term contracts and longer-term assignments, depending on your experience and availability.

Fit Out Carpenter

Example responsibilities include

· Installing and fitting bespoke interior joinery within luxury motor yachts

· Working with a variety of materials including wood, plywood, vinyl, leather, and soft furnishing materials

· Scribing components to irregular and complex shapes

· Working with pre-finished surfaces such as lacquered finishes and Avonite

· Reading and accurately interpreting design drawings and specifications

· Completing final fit and finish work to exact tolerances

· Identifying, troubleshooting, and rectifying defects to the required standard

· Collaborating with team leaders and colleagues to resolve fitting and installation challenges

· Maintaining exceptional standards of workmanship and attention to detail

· Supporting production schedules whilst ensuring quality standards are met

 

· To be considered for this role, you should have:

· Previous carpentry, joinery, fit-out, shop fitting, kitchen fitting, or marine carpentry experience

· The ability to work accurately and consistently to a high standard of quality

· Experience working with a variety of materials and finishes

· The ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

· Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently when required

· Excellent attention to detail and a thorough approach to workmanship

· The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment

· Your own toolkit, including items such as a block plane, square, screwdriver set, tape measure, level, Stanley knife, and other essential carpentry tools

· An apprenticeship in carpentry or joinery would be advantageous

· Previous marine industry experience is desirable but not essential

· Experience in shop fitting, kitchen fitting, or high-end residential interiors would be highly beneficial

 

Finisher

Example responsibilities include

· Trimming, sanding, and polishing GRP components to required quality standards

· Using sanders and a variety of sandpaper grades to achieve the desired finish

· Operating hand tools, air tools, and mechanical cutting equipment safely and effectively

· Removing excess material from GRP components and cutting parts to specification

· Applying various polishing techniques to produce a high-quality finished surface

· Inspecting components for defects and supporting quality control activities

· Maintaining high levels of workmanship and attention to detail

· Following all health and safety procedures and wearing the required PPE

· Working collaboratively with colleagues across the production team

· Contributing to the delivery of luxury motor yachts within agreed production schedules

 

To be considered for this role, you should have:

· A minimum of 2 years’ experience within a finishing role

· Experience working with sanding, trimming, polishing, or surface finishing processes

· The ability to consistently deliver work to a high standard of quality

· Experience using hand tools, air tools, and mechanical cutting equipment

· Strong attention to detail and a quality-focused approach

· A good understanding of health and safety requirements within a manufacturing environment

· A reliable, punctual, and professional approach to work

· Experience within automotive body repair would be highly advantageous

· Previous marine industry experience is desirable but not essential

· The ability to work effectively within a fast-paced production environment

 

Laminator

· Workplace Organisation: Maintain cleanliness and organisation in the workplace and production areas.

· Preparation and Application: Prepare moulds and materials for lay-up (gelcoat application, cutting mat and cloth).

· Handling of materials: Mix resins and catalyst with accuracy and attention to safety protocols.

· Execute Manufacturing Operations: Cut, layup, and apply layers of fibreglass and resin according to specification.

· Quality Systems: Follow and adhere to all technical drawings, build specifications and any other supporting documentation.

· Quality Inspection: Observe and assist in inspecting parts for defects and follow quality control standards to ensure the final product meets specifications.

· Adhere to Safety Protocols: Follow health and safety guidelines, wearing required PPE and ensuring a safe working environment.

· Support Production Team: Work closely with the production team, supporting day-to-day tasks as directed.

 

Main tasks include:

 

1. The successful candidate should ideally have experience and knowledge in the use of the following materials:

a. gel coats and flow coats

b. polyester, isophthalic and vinyl esters. (catalyst to resin ratios)

c. chopped strand material of various weights

d. cloths of various weights and types

e. core materials of various types

f. bonding and filleting pastes.

2. You must be fully conversant with Health and Safety regulations with particular reference to GRP materials and their use.

3. Should be conversant in the following areas:

a. mould preparation

b. methods of mould release

c. all aspects of hand lay-up

d. personal protective equipment (PPE)

4. Preferable though not essential, knowledge of and use of Chopper guns and resin transfer machinery techniques.
