HSE Superintendent – Vessel Services – Australia

Location: Perth Office

Role Purpose

The role of the HSE Superintendent – Vessel Services – Australia is to:

• Provide operational HSE support to the HSE Lead across the Australian vessel fleet.
• Ensure operational HSE risks are effectively identified, managed and compliance with company, client, and regulatory requirements is achieved.
• Drive a high-performing safety culture, embedding strong HSE behaviours, and ensuring that HSE is deeply integrated into operational decision-making.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. HSE Management & Operational Safety

• Provide support on all HSE matters for Australian vessel operations and support to operational and fleet HSE matters.
• Align vessel HSE activities with company-wide HSEQ strategy, including sustainability and risk management priorities.
• Support the implementation and continuous improvement of HSE systems and processes across the Australian vessel fleet.
• Conduct regular site/vessel inspections and audits to monitor HSE compliance and performance.
• Assist in coordinating and delivering HSE training and awareness campaigns to vessel personnel.
• Work closely with Vessel Managers and Chartering team as required.
• Ensure vessel operations comply with applicable standards and Vessel Safety Cases (where applicable).
• Represent the Vessel Operations division in client HSE engagements, audits and reviews.
• Assist in the development of charter specific HSE, Quality, and Emergency Response Plans.

  1. Client Interface & Management

• Undertake applicable due diligence activities to ensure contractor services and equipment comply with both Company and industry HSE standards.
• Ensure bridging documents and interface risk registers are current and effective.

  1. Risk Management, Incident Management & Emergency Preparedness

• Support Vessel Managers, and crews with the implementation of safe systems of work, hazard identification, and risk controls.
• Support incident investigations using ICAM or equivalent methodology.
• Ensure incidents are entered into Unisea within the required timeframes and maintain a quality oversight of all incident information, corrective and preventative actions and evidence uploaded to support closeout.
• Where applicable, coordinate emergency drills offshore and ensure alignment with Emergency Response Plans.
• Support emergency response preparedness and business continuity planning for vessel operations.
• Maintain a readiness state for medical and evacuation scenarios.

  1. Governance & Compliance, Performance Monitoring & Reporting

• Ensure vessel operations comply with applicable maritime safety regulations (e.g., ISM Code, Marine Orders, MLC), company standards, and client requirements.
• Manage HSE-related documentation and contribute to the continual improvement of the UniSea.
• Monitor and report HSE performance metrics, including leading and lagging indicators, and contribute to internal and external reporting obligations.
• Provide oversight of all Australian vessel HSE data and information within Unisea.
• Ensure timely and accurate internal and external reporting in line with company, client and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to monthly HSE reports, dashboards, and lessons learned registers.

  1. Culture & Leadership

• Lead toolbox talks, safety stand-downs and workforce engagement sessions to foster open communication and shared accountability.
• Promote Target 365 and company safety initiatives across Australian vessel operations.

Essential Qualifications

• Former or current maritime qualification (e.g., Chief Mate or Second Mater <3000GT).

Desirable Qualifications

• Knowledge of international standards and codes, including ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC and ISPS.

Key Competencies

• Experience conducting or participating in internal/external audits (e.g., ISM, ISO, Flag State Inspections, Port State Control).
• Ability to assist in investigations and ensure effective corrective and preventative action.
• Skilled in root cause analysis (e.g., ICAM, 5Why, or equivalent).
